Our Story

Tucked away down the historical Waterhouse Lane in Scarborough, Relish opened its door for the first time in October 2015. Owner, Kathryn Whitelaw was inspired by a French patisserie called Amelie’s in North Carolina where she lived for a year during University.

Amelie’s offered a quirky yet comfortable setting for all ages and she knew that was something she wanted to create in her hometown of Scarborough, upon her return.

Not long after returning to the UK, Kathryn’s dad purchased the property on Waterhouse Lane for his long-established Joinery business office to reside.

However, there was one problem...there was just too much space! The building was in major need of some love and attention having been left derelict for over ten years. That’s when Kathryn decided that student life simply was not for her and that it was time for a new adventure.

She accepted the challenge of renovating what would soon be Relish along with her dad who shared her amazing vision of what it was to be.

The nine-month renovation was far from easy with numerous hurdles and bumps along the way, but after nearly a year of hard work, Kathryn and her dad had managed to create a café unlike any other in the area. Boasting two large seating areas, wide doors for easy access of prams/wheelchairs, warming bright orange interiors and of course a delightful menu full of homemade favourites. In October 2015, Relish was ready to welcome its first customers.

As with any new business, it took a few months for Relish to be discovered by locals but with the determination to make the business work, Kathryn and her team remained consistent and Relish soon became an established favourite for the people of Scarborough and beyond.

Nine months after opening, Kathryn’s twin sister, Jenny decided to leave her job and join Team Relish. They have been in partnership ever since and haven’t looked back! Now, Kathryn and Jenny run the business together with a small and loyal team of staff.
